Things kinda suck right now. Not like everything is terrible, just more like my patience is constantly being tested and not much is going right. So I've decided I'm going to make up an imaginary life for this blog.
Cam and I are getting ready to open up our shop. We had some disagreements on how to decorate it. He wanted something that felt like a coffee shop, cozy that supported local artists, with a natural yet dark color theme. I wanted a vintage vibe, 1920s inspiration, leather chairs, industrial shelving, dark decor. Elegant and sophisticated. But it isn't a coffee shop, or a bar, as mine would have been appropriate for. We are opening up a cupcake shop! Plant-based because we are both lactose intolerant and I never want to make something I can't try. It is also where customers can drop of vintage sewing machines to have serviced. This is a hobby of mine, so it just made sense to have both businesses run out of the same shop.
For this reason, we combined the concept. It is a tasteful steampunk theme with natural colors and lo-fi music that plays in the background. We also have an old vinyl that we play music on sometimes, like Jimmy Reed or Betty Hutton, or some kind of old country that catches Cam's fancy. The plan is to offer customers a chance to bring their own vinyl to play on the record player. It isn't my grandfather's, like what we keep at our house, but rather a cute, modern one that connects wirelessly to the corner speakers.
Our shop is called Vinyl & Vine Cupcakes. We're putting the final touches on the decorations, adding some extra fake vines around thin copper pipes that line the walls. And making sure the menu is ready. We have two cupcakes based off our cats, Puddles and Moonlight. Moonlight is our tiny, feisty tuxedo who thinks she is a large mountain cat. Her cupcake is dark chocolate with raspberry filling and a buttercream frosting. Puddles is my big, spoiled baby. He's white with a stripes orange tail and a few random orange spots. Both cats are long-haired, or else we would bring them to the shop with us. As such, we keep them at the house where their fur can only bother us. For the cupcake based off puddles, it is a white chocolate cupcake with orange filling and french vanilla frosting. It was difficult to find a recipe we liked, but we tweaked it until we both agreed to it. He likes sweeter, I like richer flavors.
We plan to have some liquor-infused options, but that will come much later. For now, we're just focused on opening up with a simple menu and see how things go.
Oh! He's hollering for me. I should go see what he needs. Until next time.
Love,
JS
